Fällt in einem Gespräch der Begriff CT oder „Computertomographie“, denken zunächst viele an den Bereich der Medizintechnik. Sicherlich ist die Technik auch dort vielseitig und vor allem hilfreich einsetzbar, allerdings lässt sie sich auch – auf anderer Basis natürlich – industriell nutzen. Die technische Umsetzung ist eine andere, das grundsätzliche Funktionsprinzip ist aber gleich.



Das Funktionsprinzip der industriellen Computertomographie ist schnell erklärt: Zwischen einer Strahlenquelle (Röntgenröhre) und dem Detektor wird das zu untersuchende Bauteil platziert. Es wird durchstrahlt und mittels Detektor eine 2D-Projektion aufgenommen. Danach wird das Bauteil durch eine Drehachse  schrittweise um ein Grad oder weniger rotiert und wieder eine Aufnahme gemacht. Durch den Detektor können die Aufnahmen digital abgespeichert werden. Die Entwicklung eines Röntgenfilms ist nicht notwendig. Der entscheidende Unterschied zur Computertomographie in der Medizintechnik ist die Tatsache, dass das Prüfobjekt rotiert wird. Das wäre im Untersuchungssaal nicht vorstellbar, hier rotiert die Röntgentechnik um den Patienten, der möglichst ohne große Bewegungen in der „Röhre“ liegt.

Aus der Vielzahl der Einzelbilder, die während der 360°-Drehung entstanden sind, wird dann am Computer das 3D-Volumen-Abbild rekonstruiert. Die Aufnahmequalität ist dabei stark mit der Anzahl der Winkelschritte und damit mit der Anzahl der Einzelbilder (und damit auch der Prüfdauer) verknüpft. Einfach ausgedrückt: je kleiner der Drehwinkel, desto größer ist die Anzahl der Einzelbilder und desto höher die Genauigkeit.
